My Next Wasen Model Display, March 1st – 31st , 2018

I may be no Yukio Nakayama, but I will have my own wasen model display coming up again in Japantown, San Francisco, in the display window of Union Bank’s community room inside the Japan Center’s East Mall.

My 7th wasen model display will take place from March 1st through March 31st, 2018, in the display window of Union Bank’s community room inside the Japan Center’s East Mall in San Francisco. The mall’s address, is 1737 Post Street.

This year, I’m showing two new scratch built models: The Hozugawa Ayubune and the Urayasu Bekabune – two small boats, both about 15″ long, built at 1/10 scale. The Ayubune is a small fishing boat that was used on the Hozu River, northwest of Kyōto. The Bekabune is a seaweed harvesting boat that was once used on Tōkyō Bay. Both models are based on notes collected by American boatbuilder Douglas Brooks.

In addition, I plan to have all the models I’ve shown in the past, including the Hacchoro, an 8-oared fishing boat from Yaizu; a Higaki-kaisen, a large coastal transport that once carried consumer goods between Ōsaka and Tōkyō; a Yakatabune, which was a type of pleasure riverboat from the Edo period; a Tosa fishing boat from Kōchi prefecture, Shikoku; an as of yet incomplete Kamakura period sea boat; and a small-scale model of a rice field boat from Gifu prefecture in central Japan.
